Fantastical for Apple Watch got a really nice update yesterday, whereby it allows you to schedule an appointment using the Scribble feature on the watch. I have long wanted this feature built in – in fact since Scribble was announced for the Watch, I thought of Fantastical as the perfect app for its implementation and daily use.
Up until today, I have used a Workflow workflow on the watch which allowed the addition of a calendar appointment, but it was fairly clunky. You had to add the title, confirm, pick the date field, scroll, confirm…ugh.
Too much tapping.
Well, as is typical of Flexibits (the makers of Fantastical) they have done a perfect implementation on the watch using this feature. When in Fantastical you just force press the watch face to get the “+” button which allows you to add a new calendar entry, like this:
As you can see, you have the choice of either the voice entry by tapping the microphone icon, or the new Scribble feature. You simply scribble something like “Pick kids up from soccer at 123 Main st at 4p today”, click done and when the confirmation screen is generated, tap “Create event.”
Also, a handy feature that can be found immediately below those buttons is that Fantastical keeps recently entered appointments here, so that if you hold the same type of meeting with any regularity, you don’t have to enter it again by voice or Scribble. You just tap that last instance of it, and it’s on your calendar everywhere! As an example, you can see that I have recently created an entry to Write at home from 6a-7a on my Entrepreneurial calendar.
By the way – specifying the calendar that your entry goes onto (if you have multiple calendars that Fantastical is monitoring) can be invoked by typing the backslash immediately followed by the first letter of the calendar’s name.
After I click “Create Event”, it’s on my Watch, iPhone, iPad and Mac:
Overall, I find this feature perfect for adding an appointment when you are just in a place where writing or speaking on your phone isn’t the best option.
This is such a welcome update from Fantastical for the Watch.
